The North Head Lighthouse was first lit on May 16, 1898 and had a First-order Fresnel lens. It overlooks the Pacific Ocean from North Head on the coast of Washington. This lighthouse stands 66 feet tall, and Cal the cormorant was first attracted to its shining light in the sweeping fog as he flew along the shore past Cape Disappointment. He had become a bit disoriented, as so many ship captains along the coast have in this sort of weather. He saw the glowing light cutting through the thick fog, and perched atop its strong base. He regained his composure, and a wave of peace washed over him as he looked around from his new vantage point in the warm hazy light. Night was fast approaching, but Cal no longer felt anxious at the impending darkness. He was engulfed in the warm misty glow of the lens, and felt grateful to this tall light for keeping watch in the darkness for travelers like himself.
