10 Years Exhibition - Jon MacNair
Working exclusively in india ink on paper Jon MacNair is a meticulous observer of his craft as well as a creative wizard. In his career to date he has constructed a multi-layered, infinitely compelling alternate world filled with an array of recurring characters. Those who are familiar with his paintings are able to plot a narrative through each series based on an understanding of the genesis and story of each. Those viewing it for the first time are offered a snippet of something grand, a breadcrumb which might lead them into a fantastical landscape if they’re willing take that first step.
Jon MacNair & Antler Gallery
We met Jon at our original 100sqft gallery in the first year we were open. He came to an opening reception at a time when we knew pretty much everyone who would attend by name. We started a conversation and learned he was an artist, he gave us some postcards of his work and we were immediately keen to exhibit his paintings. We set up a solo show for later in the year and have been working together ever since. Beyond our working relationship Jon became a close friend and we were very sad to see him leave Portland for Texas a few years ago. As an artist he is like a modern, monochromatic, Hieronymus Bosch. His paintings in India ink are stunningly executed and intensely layered with narrative. Jon creates a world which is both all of its own and a reflection of ours.
