Amory Abbott - Grief and the Firmament
This series of works imagine the shifting spaces between the physical and spiritually symbolic heights of our world and the disappearing ground beneath our feet. This series furthers a curiosity about what the world will look like after the end of humanity, what traces of us remain, and what cataclysm follows in our wake. The torn bottoms represent a foundation and familiarity in our existence that has been ripped away, lost from us, or perhaps by us. In these works, the last of the rivers flow through quaking and splitting terrain, plummeting into mysterious voids, carving further into a deeper, brighter world that we will never see. I wonder what moon-lit paths can be walked between the everlasting ‘heavens’ we form in our mind, and the reality of losses that we are facing on the individual and global scale. Certainly, there are trails through that terrain. Not all of them may lead somewhere safe, but we must find them, and walk them nevertheless.
