This show is rooted in an appreciation for the richness and beauty that resides within the everyday. To me, “subliminal celebrations” are the unexpected moments where seemingly common things become enchanting because of a unique correspondence of time, movement and attention in which we encounter them. The affective relation that unfolds transcends the enchantment of things as the tangible objects that they’re often understood to be, and draws attention to their capability of continuously filling us with wonder.
Subliminal celebrations occur within our subconsciousness, our tacit and embodied understanding of what it means to be alive. Subliminal celebrations are personal, intimate moments of magic. They are presents in disguise. They are sparks of happiness that befall us. They reside in a world of affects, rather than objects, that by its very nature can’t be explicated, but brings forth a one of a kind beauty that brings us joy and gratitude and that deserves to be acknowledged and, indeed, celebrated.
Through these five new paintings I have tried to highlight certain aspects of what I imagine that these subliminal celebrations can generate and entail. It’s a humble homage to the wisdom, beauty and enchantment that lies within our subconsciousness, and the strength and light it provides to appreciate life, even when this life is imbued with uncertainties and constant changes, such as the ones we’re still being faced with in the course of this pandemic.
