Emily Thompson’s paintings focus on disappearing Americana architecture, from roadside diners and surfside motels to industrial signage and rustic barns. Her oil-on-panel works combine recognizable imagery with textured, expressionistic brushwork. Thompson’s backgrounds often contain pale renderings of letters or words that appear almost as apparitions. She has worked across mediums, including acrylic, ink, collage, and graphic design. Thompson received a BFA in 1985 from the School of Visual Arts. She has cited Richard Diebenkorn, Helen Frankenthaler, Robert Motherwell, and Mark Rothko as painterly influences. Her work has been exhibited in venues such as the Monmouth Museum, the Trenton City Museum, and the Woodmere Art Museum.
