Josh Keyes created this painting for the fourth incarnation of Antler Gallery's show "Unnatural Histories" in 2015.
With the first light of dawn, comes a rumbling and
scraping sound echoing from the deserted streets. The
fallow deer’s muscles strain against the heavy boulders
of trash and debris as they push the large balls of
rubbish through the street and deposit them at the edge
of the city. Over time, these large trash deposits form a
series of spherical mounds that are eventually
consumed, and covered by vegetation. The deer uses its
antlers to scrape along the street collecting paper,
plastic, abandoned appliances, and sometimes the
bones and remains of humans.
