Patterson has always been shy. He struggled to express himself with the other tufted puffins, and spent most of his time exploring the rocky sides of Haystack Rock in Cannon Beach, Oregon. On a foggy evening, he strolled along the very top of the gigantic rock and found himself completely alone and engulfed in the cold rolling fog. Suddenly, a figure emerged gracefully above him. It was a fish with a beautiful sleek tail. The fish explained that he too had been exploring the magical rock in the water when suddenly he realized he was no longer swimming, but flying. So he flew to the very top of the rock to see what no other fish had ever been able to see before, and suddenly he found himself completely surrounded by fog. "That's when I saw you," explained the fish. "Well, since we both seem to be stuck up here until the fog clears a bit, would you like to sit with me and swap stories about our travels?” Patterson asked, and the fish happily agreed. Patterson was so happy that his solitary adventure had led him to his new fish friend, and together they promised to always return to the top of
Haystack Rock as the fog rolled in so they could enjoy the quiet peace together.
