Hybernaculum

"There has been a common misapprehension as old as Aristotle, that a great number of birds especially the Barn Swallow would hide out the winter months to slumber away, in a torpid state, deep in the mud of rivers, lakes and ponds till the return of the spring sun.
The perpetuation of this erroneous myth seems to have been born more out of a deep personal yearning and fear of change rather than any true scientific observation. Perhaps the love and devotion for the swallow brought out ulterior reasons in the minds of these enlightened naturalists, a yearning for the endless summer."
