Nekomata

"Nekomata are a type of Yōkai, supernatural spirits found in Japanese folklore. When a domestic cat is raised for many years and grows old, it will eventually become nekomata, with its tail splitting into two. Stories say that if a house is haunted with mysterious and unexplainable events, such occurrences will end only upon the death of the nekomata living there. If this demon-cat was treated poorly in life, it will haunt those guilty by summoning visitations from dead relatives. Due to such malevolence and darkness being associated with nekomata, kittens would sometimes have their tails chopped off, in hopes that if a tail couldn't properly split, the cat could not become nekomata later in life."
